Dental Filling

What are Dental Fillings?

To treat a cavity, a dentist will remove the decayed tooth tissue and fill the space with a filling material. This restores the tooth’s structure and prevents further decay. Prompt treatment by a dentist is important to prevent further damage.

Causes

Tooth decay, also known as dental caries, occurs when harmful bacteria in the mouth produce acids that attack the tooth enamel. This can result in the formation of cavities, small holes in the teeth, and in more severe cases, the destruction of the entire tooth. If left untreated, tooth decay can lead to pain, infection, and even tooth loss.
Frequent exposure to acid, particularly from sugary and starchy foods and drinks, can cause the enamel to lose minerals and appear as white spots, indicating early decay. However, tooth decay can be reversed at this stage through the use of minerals from saliva and fluoride from toothpaste or other sources.
If left unchecked, the decay process continues, resulting in further mineral loss and weakened enamel, eventually leading to the formation of cavities. It’s important to seek treatment as soon as possible to prevent further damage and maintain good oral health.

Treatment

To repair cavities, there are different filling options available such as tooth-colored (composite) and silver-colored (amalgam) fillings. Composite fillings are becoming popular because of their natural appearance and continuous improvements.
For badly damaged teeth, crowns made of gold or other metals, porcelain, or stainless steel can be used. However, both dental fillings and crowns have a limited lifespan.

To ease pain during the recovery period, follow these helpful tips.

1. AVOID EXTREME FOOD AND DRINK TEMPERATURES:

After a minor drilling procedure, your tooth becomes sensitive and is prone to react to any disturbance. It reacts strongly to cold or hot foods and liquids. Therefore, during the recovery phase, it’s recommended to avoid extreme temperatures and stick to room temperature water. These simple tips can help you manage tooth sensitivity after a drilling procedure.

2. SOFT FOODS ARE BEST:

To facilitate the healing process, it’s important to avoid putting pressure on the affected tooth after a dental procedure. This means avoiding clenching or grinding your teeth and opting for soft foods that require minimal chewing. Hard foods such as chips and raw vegetables can irritate the tooth and even damage the newly filled cavity. Follow these simple tips to promote optimal recovery after a dental procedure.

3. DO NOT TRY TO SWALLOW THE PAIN AWAY:

It’s common for people to experience pain and soreness after dental procedures, and some may be tempted to aggressively lick or suck on the affected tooth. However, this will only cause further discomfort and irritation. It’s important to avoid this practice and seek professional help if the pain persists for more than a week or intensifies to a significant level, as it could be a sign of an infection or other complications. Follow these helpful tips to manage discomfort after dental procedures.
